Tatiana ’Tania’ Harrison had an idea about opening a healthy fast food establishment since
the late seventies. Busy with her career, she never realized the idea.
On March 28th 2002 Tatiana got together for lunch with her former co-worker
from Primus (her last software employer), Concetta Curtis, at the Woodinville Top Foods market. By
then Concetta exhausted all her avenues for finding a high tech job and
was looking for new creative ways to find a badly needed job. |
Tania and Concetta decided to open a mobile vegetarian hot dog cart as a way to make money
and network in order to find jobs in high tech industry. The plan was to place a mobile cart
in front of the Westlake mall during the week and attend art fair and
sports events on weekends. Tania was going to dress in a dog suit and
have a sign outside the cart saying: Support local starving software engineers.
Meanwhile, give people their resumes and continue looking for an engineering job...

The original company was formed on April 1, 2002 by Tatiana Harrison and Concetta
Curtis. The team very quickly discovered that it is not allowed by Seattle-King
County Department of Public Health to sell vegetarian hot dogs from mobile
carts. The meat hot dogs are allowed if they are approved by USDA. USDA
does not regulate vegetarian meat products, therefore according to the
Health department, vegetarian hot dogs don’t meet the definition of a
hot dog and therefore not allowed.
The company was presented with its first road block. A lot of energy was
spent by Tania to learn about public health safety and government
regulations. Finally the regulation was changed. Now vegetarian hot dogs are allowed on mobile carts in the State of Washington!
The second road block was finding a commissary in the down town Seattle
area. Commissary is a Health Department approved food establishment where
food and cart could be stored and utensils properly washed. After the
long search the Fresh Start organization enthusiastically agreed to be
Cyber-Dogs commissary.

The fatal road block was finding a location for the cart. One can't sell food in Seattle without an official place to use a restroom.
Building owners refused to issue such a permission. There are no public restrooms in Seattle...
On April 30th, diascouraged Concetta made a decision to dissolve the partnership. |
On May 7th Tatiana Harrison formally closed CyberDogs business and opened
as Cyber-Dogs as a Sole Proprietor. On that day she filed for Master Application
and city of Seattle business permit.
Meanwhile, WA State Convention Center could not allow Tatiana
to operate in front of it on Pike Street, even though they wanted to help. As an alternative,
they suggested she uses a small closet space on the corner of Pike and 9th.
On May 9th Tania Harrison signed a letter of intent to lease at that location.
It was converted into a retail space.
The rest is history…
Start of business: April 1 2002 (no kidding!) |
